According to one source, the "Rapture" is going to happen on Saturday, roughly 6pm local time.
It has been quite humorous to me all the publicity it has gotten. It is not that I take the end of the world lightly, it is just that if one were to read the Bible it is mentioned that people will not know when the end of times comes until it has happened. This fact alone has led me to believe that at 6pm on Saturday I will be listening to Confirmation Faith Stories and NOT being taken up to Heaven or left behind to suffer through the tribulation.
The problem that arises when we take the Bible literally is that we miss the fact that part of our Christian tradition is storytelling. Just because Revelation says horsemen are going to come out of the ground doesn't mean that we will actually have people bursting out of the ground to end the world.
As Lutherans we are called to think critically about the text in the Bible. We are called to ask questions. Is this text talking to all people or just one group of people? Is this story a story that is based in fact or is it an allegory used to help us understand God better? These are the things we need to think about as we read the Bible. But I could be wrong.
I guess we will find out Saturday.
